about

Middernachtmysterie (Midnightmystery). I wrote this after seeing the painting with this title by the Dutch painter Johfra. It’s a work of both chaos and beauty. In the 1980s I recorded it with Michiel Bemelmans, an amazing saxophone and flute player. I showed him a reproduction of the painting, told him about my musical interpretation of it. He sat down on the floor with his instruments and we started recording. We did one take and it was exactly how I had it in mind. Afterwards we lost contact and many years later I heard that he killed himself after being mentally ill for quite some time. I was shocked. Michiel was such a nice and sensitive person. There must have been a vacancy in the angel’s orchestra. Rob and Stan did a great job recording a new and better version of this piece.
